Frequently Asked Tryouts Questions

When will tryouts be held?

If your travel soccer player missed “open tryouts” and is still interested in joining, please register for tryouts, and we will contact you shortly thereafter.

Players ages 4-8 who wish to join the Development Academy can register for tryouts and receive two courtesy sessions before making an enrollment decision. Otherwise, they can enroll directly and pay the registration fee and program cost.

Where are the tryout fields located?

The Fields at RFK Campus: 401 Oklahoma Ave NE, WDC

Brentwood Hamilton: 600 Neal Place NE, WDC

Randall: 820 South Capitol Street SW, WDC

Rosedale: 1701 Gales Street NE, WDC

How many tryout sessions should my player attend?

All trialists (returning and interested players) must attend two tryouts unless the technical staff advises otherwise. Development Academy players do not try out.

Is there a fee to try out with Washington Capital United?

NO. Tryouts are FREE.

Does my child need to register for tryouts?

YES. All current players and new trialists must register online via our new PlayMetrics “Open Tryouts” portal for SY 24/25.

MAKE SURE THE CONTACT INFORMATION SUPPLIED DURING REGISTRATION IS CURRENT AND ACTIVE.

What should my child wear to tryouts?

New trialists will wear a plain white shirt and plain dark shorts, while current WCU players will wear their assigned training gear.

What should my child bring to tryouts?

  • Soccer ball

  • Cleats

  • Shin guards

  • Water

  • Masks are optional

  • Hand sanitizer

How will my child be evaluated during tryouts?

At WCU, our technical staff will evaluate your player’s character, technical ability, and athleticism.

Our staff will look to determine:

  • Does your child like to compete?  

  • Does your child have a positive attitude and enthusiasm for the game?

  • Can your child manipulate the ball?

  • Can your child handle the ball under pressure?

  • Can your child make quick decisions on the field?

How will I know if my player is selected for a team?

All players will receive an email through our registration platform stating they have been invited to join a team, wait-listed, or rejected.

What does it mean to be wait-listed?

If a trialist rejects the offer, your player may be offered a position on the team.

When will I be notified of tryout results?

WCU strives to send offers within 3-business days of the last tryout session.

When do I have to pay the deposit?

Deposits must be paid within 72 hours of receiving an offer.
